Band poster designs by Liz Daggar

The fabulously named Liz Daggar has been operating her one-woman design firm for years now with wonderful results. With clientelle ranging from MTV and Bravo, to local bands’ gig posters (my favorite of her works), Daggar is a force to be reckoned with. Daggar also produces a line of jewelry and art prints that are lush.

Old Skull interviewed by Dave Kendall on MTV 120 Minutes

We’re getting to the era when kids these days don’t realize that MTV actually was really cool at one point. Here’s a great interview of kid punk band Old Skull on my favorite show on MTV back in the 90s, 120 Minutes.

The return of Beavis and Butthead

We are going through trying times, my brothers and sisters. It’s been dark for too long. Well, fear no more for the light has been restored and we will once again feel the warmth of its glory. The wait is over. All hail the return of Beavis and Butthead!

The first music video ever played on MTV

This Trevor Horn penned homage to the late (great) Kenny Everett was the first video ever played on MTV. And it’s still better than anything out there today.

Bizarre portraiture of Guim Tió Zarraluki

I came across Guim Tió Zarraluki’s work recently and have become completely absorbed with his disturbing, yet strangely compelling and open portraits. His combining of cartoonish and realistic elements bring the viewer in completely. Read more

The incredibly clever taxonomy of Carl Turner

Carl Turner’s work is whimsical and reminiscent of the taxonomy of Theodore Geisel. Wonderfully imaginative and incredibly clever, Turner’s has even worked up a history for his beasts. Oddly heartwarming in, well, a very morbid way.

The Chick-a-Dee smoke detector

Shouldn’t every home device be aesthetically pleasing? Yes, a smoke detector is a necessity, but why does it have to be such an eyesore? Winner of the Mooi uit de Brand design competition, this life-saving birdy has just been approved for sale in the United States.

My buddy John Bohl was just featured on Beautiful Decay, which is pretty awesome. Bohl does weird, melty paintings that skirt the line between the abstract and the surreal, with an ultra-distorted pop sensibility.

The job of a fashion photographer is to make people hate themselves because they’re not as hot or as cool as the people in the pictures. I wonder how Michael Flores sleeps at night knowing he’s ruined the self-esteems of thousands of people. Read more

In Japan, when one makes squeezing gestures with both hands at chest level, one is gesturing that one wants candy — soft, round, bouncy candy. At least, that’s what this commercial would have us believe.

Can this be true? Florent, the legendary eatery of New York’s Meat Packing District, is about to become the next victim of sky-rocketing Manhattan leases. Luckily we still have one more month to be nostalgic at Florent. I’m going (with a whole bunch of friends) this weekend. Read more

The coolest band in Indonesia? I think so. White Shoes & The Couples Company describe themselves as a small band that is ‘influenced by Indonesian movie soundtracks from the 70s and inspired by the acoustic spirit of 1930′s classic jazz musicians’. But I like to think of them as carrying the torch for artists like Benny Goodman, Tahiti 80, and The Cardigans, all at the same time.

Listen to their track, Super Reuni.

I received a Kobe Beefcake t-shirt today and I’m already in meat-lover’s heaven. Who’d have thought all those funky shapes are actually cuts of meat? This new label from Kobe Japan is an insider’s (and meat-lover’s) treasure.
