Amy Crehore
Recently hung one of Amy Crehore’s beautiful oil paintings Vulnerable Seascape up on my wall. I’ve always loved the evocative nature of Crehore’s work, whether it is on canvas or her trademark Ukuleles. There is a sense of languid playfulness and occasional erotic undertones running through her perfectly executed pieces. Time seems to stand still for her sensual, long limbed girls, curious cats and mischievous monkeys.

Princess Chelsea: Monkey Eats Bananas
I recently caught up with indie pop musician Princess Chelsea for a late night drink. A writer, composer and singer, Princess Chelsea is a rising young talent whose music has been described by Rolling Stone magazine as ‘absolutely sublime.’ Her quirky lyrics and ethereal voice seamlessly join in an eerie Burton-esque crescendo and reminds me a little of going to a creepy fun fair late at night.

GlitterTrees: selling beautiful Australian eco products
Being an analogue junkie, I still enjoy window shopping. But what beats shopping in your pyjamas? A recent favourite online haunt of mine is GlitterTrees. The brainchild of Melissa Peters, (founder of Love Bento), GlitterTrees is an online shopping destination with a focus on beautiful eco products. Taking this one step further, the site pledges to plant a tree with every $50 spent.

I went to a charity dinner at Café Hanoi, a modern Vietnamese restaurant, hidden behind a bright red door away from the bustling streets of downtown Auckland. Growing up in a predominantly Vietnamese community, I am quite familiar with the flavours that make up this delicate cuisine. I fell in love with their Pho, presented in a fresh and unique way while still retaining the authenticity of the trademark dish.

Helmut Smits is a multidisciplinary visual artist based in the Netherlands. Packaging of all kind seems to fascinate him, at least enough to serve as components for his modern sculptures and art installations. I like the idea of making use of old tins, cans or bottles in a creative way. Read more
With its long history in poster design and with a younger generation of artists who grew up with both Eastern and Western European influences, the ‘new Poland’ is booming. I had a blast when I visited Warsaw about a year ago and met all the movers and shakers in design. My friend just sent me a link to Tymek Jezierski’s amazing comic works. They’re so fresh! The only problem I have with them is that I don’t read Polish.
The Liars were in the Netherlands recently and we came across some kids doing this dance. It’s really bizarre to watch. Read more

Things continue to improve for New York’s metal scene, if Batillus are any indication. The sludge/doom trio from Brooklyn offer crushingly heavy, down-tuned and down-tempo instrumental riffage that sounds like what a mutant that has crawled out of Newtown Creek might have on his iPod. The band recently added vocalist Fade Kainer of Inswarm (Jarboe’s touring band) to its line-up.

The original Lomography Sidekick bag has had a revamp. Though it still maintains its 2-in-1 design, it now houses a smaller section to comfortably hold compact cameras, and a larger compartment for all the other things you need. It also fits your laptops. Oh, and the exterior is made from 100% water-resistant TPE. Fun!
