Haunting video for Joy Division’s She’s Lost Control
Pieter Hugo is one of South Africa’s most talented photographers, probably best known for his Hyena Men, Nollywood and Permanent Error series’. When he ventured off into the world of video, it would only make sense for him to join up with one of the freshest MC’s in the country, Spoek Mathambo. Together they created a very cool and haunting black and white video for Joy Division’s She’s Lost Control. The video was shot in Cape Town’s township of Langa and featured children from the local dance group Happy Feet.

Darkwave cover of Joy Division’s She’s Lost Control
Control, a ‘darkwave township house’ cover of the Joy Division classic She’s Lost Control, is the fourth single to be taken from South African producer/DJ Spoek Mathambo’s album, Mshini Wam. The video was shot in Langa, a township in Cape Town and was made using a cast made up mainly of kids from the local dance troupe, Happy Feet. Eerie, and just plain frikken’ cool! Directed and shot by Peter Hugo and Micheal Cleary.
Playmobil Pop! a new video from Joy Division animator
D.O. Roth, the German video director who brought Joy Division back to life in a Playmobil animation, earning more than 600,000 YouTube viewers, has struck again. Last year, the internet came alive with talk of the legendary band’s 1979 TV performance of Transmission being performed by the toy figures. Read more
Cool video for the Crystal Stilts song Departure
Formed in 2003 by Brad Hargett and JB Townsend in New York, this band is a glorious ‘Noise pop’ blend of Joy Division and Interpol, with a pleasant splattering of their own individuality. It’s my first port of call if I want to get stuck into a big drawing.

Cape Town is a pretty exciting place in general but if you are keen on art, good food, and second-hand shops, you should head down to Woodstock. Find new exhibitions at the Goodman Gallery and the Stevenson Gallery, have lunch at Superette or The Kitchen, and do some vintage shopping at The Cat’s Meow or Second Time Around. If you feel like some people watching and good food on a Saturday morning, then head down to the arts and crafts market, known locally as the Old Biscuit Mill.

Poladarium: tear-off calendars featuring 366 Polaroids
I am not one to have a calendar hanging on any wall anywhere in my house but these Poladariums are a must-have for 2012. Only 88mm x 108mm, they feature 366 Polaroids taken by various artists and there is a little inscription on the back of each page with more information. These tear-off calenders are published by Seltmann & Söhne in Germany but available worldwide.
I can’t remember when I first heard Mark Lanegan’s voice. I think I’ve always known it. That dark, growling, beautiful voice. For the first time since his last solo album, Bubblegum, in 2004, a new record is about to be released early February. The record is called Blues Funeral and features the likes of Josh Homme, Jack Irons and Greg Dulli. I am especially pleased Greg Dulli is joining him because no one can beg and plead as seductively as he can, even on a bad day.

I’ve never seen romantic love used as a theme in high concept street art as effectively as with the work of Brusse. I love the specificity of this mode of communication and the array of cliches and one-liners inherent in it.

This entertaining documentary follows a group of seemingly clichéd American teenagers in their last year of high school. Through a comprehensive recording of their lives it reminds us that, when examining anything in detail, there is no such thing as a cliché. The naivety and hope of each student shines through, providing a memorable and accurate portrait of a middle-American high school. Read more
Located on a mountain in country outside Mudgee, in New South Wales, Australia, a permanent camp designed by Casey Brown has been set. A timber structure clad in copper has been designed to have a closed state and an open state. From the closed position, the flanks of copper are hoisted and capture views across the valley. With an imagery of structures, materials and mechanics of old, there is something romantic about this foothold on the hill.
The Mystic Lady Tumblr is filled with a lot of, what seems to be, found images. Whether its her prolific collection of National Geographic scans, or even the images that she reblogs, she has impeccable taste and has created an amazing aesthetic.
I haven’t been this excited by a band in a long time. Florida’s Black Kids have crept under — and now over — the radar through a demo and some serious internet buzz from NME and Pitchfork. Not only are they ridiculously good, they’ve also offered their four-song demo — Wizard of Ahhh’s — for free on their MySpace page. Sweet.
