Born Gold: a band out of Alberta, Canada

Back when they were going by the name Gobble Gobble, these guys released a hefty sum of free digital singles, each more frantic, catchy, poppy, and astounding than the last. Recently redubbed Born Gold, the group released their debut LP, Bodysongs, to entirely unsurprising universal acclaim.

Think glitchy complex beats in combo with spastic electromentals, a heavy dose of surreal and gorgeous lyricism, with the occasional flash of terror. Canada has managed to jump onto the indie music map big time in the last couple of years, and these Alberta natives are at the forefront.

Sam Wallman’s comic book Being Born is Going Blind

Sam Wallman has recently released his second art/comic book, Being Born is Going Blind. Young and prolific like every forward thinking creative these days, Wallman’s work is jammed full of witty observations, societal critique and chilling world truths. At times his dense line work and blatant opinions can be overwhelming, but after taking a minute to absorb his undeniably considered and coy morals you can’t turn back. Read more

Oh man, what I wouldn’t give to be able to sing like Neil Finn. His voice rasps with all the sincerity and integrity of a thousand heartfelt melodies. Heck, I’d probably trade my prized collection of Archie comics for just the chorus on this song. Driving Me Mad? You betcha(dupa). This man is a treasure. Bow low indeed.

No, this is not a still from a Dr Who episode. It is, instead, the facade of the Wotruba Church, built between 1974 and 1976 and located in the beautiful Austrian suburb of Mauer, the 23rd district of Vienna. Now, if only all religious buildings were so damn adventurous. It would kinda make Christmas mass more enjoyable. Read more

Monarch are an incredibly grim, lumbering doom metal band from Basque country in France. Frontwoman Emilie Bresson is one of those rare female singers in metal that’s at once fierce and raspy, yet identifiably female, creating a haunting, menacing sound that can stand up against the most ragingly macho bands out there.

The latest in the Stephanie Simek jewellery collection is the Powder necklace, a pearlized Turbo Cinereus shell with tiny holes drilled into the bottom and filled with a sparkling silver-colored powder. Read more
