The fantastical fairytale world of Ann Mei
I love imagery that invites storytelling, so I’m drawn to fairytale and surrealist art. Ann Mei does an excellent job of creating illustrations that merge both genres. Innocence is typically the centerpiece of her work, but the eerie backdrops lure me in, hold me captive, and make me want answers. Like a good fairytale should.

Paintings of distant horizons by Christianna Cassisa
In 2011, artist Christianna Cassisa, created a series of paintings called The Place. In Cassisa’s words: ‘The Place exists inside and outside of each of us, meeting at the point of our inspired expressions’. Each painting is of a distant horizon. Albeit abstract, Cassisa evokes emotion through the unique color palettes used in each painting in the eight piece series.
Little Bang Theory: a photo blog about New England
I am guilty of romanticizing New England. I daydream about milking goats by a waterfall in the autumn while snacking on Vermont cheddar. Perhaps this explains why I’m drawn to the blog Little Bang Theory written by The Cunning Runt, a photographer living in the hills of Western Massachusetts. It’s through his photographs and travels around New England that I’m able to escape the horror of sunny San Diego.
I own three replicas of para-surrealist painter, Remedios Varo. All three paintings involve masks, secret identities and (depending on your take) hidden self-truths. If I could afford it, my entire house would be a gallery to this amazing artist often overshadowed Frida Kahlo, Diego Rivera, and recently passed Leonora Carrington, all of whom Remedios met after fleeing occupied France in 1941 for Mexico City. The Deal sisters have dropped off the indie-rock radar of late, but this clip of them covering Hank Williams’ I Can’t Help It reminds us why we all loved them so much back in the day. Incidentally, the Breeders are set to release their new album, Mountain Battles, in April.
Summertime at McCarren Park in Williamsburg is picturesque. It’s often filled with a mix of people, old and young, picnicking or sitting in the shade, running along the track or playing soccer (or football, depending on where you’re from). It’s also connected to a now defunct McCarren (swimming) pool which transforms into an outdoor concert space on Sundays during the summer. In the past, performers such as Leslie Feist, M.I.A., The Yeah Yeah Yeahs, and Broken Social Scene have performed. Read more
When I did the Master Cleanse diet a few years ago — the one where you consume nothing but lemon juice, maple syrup, and cayenne pepper for ten days — I sat at work looking at pictures of food as if they were porn. Scanwiches would have gotten me hot and bothered like nothing else.
I got to check out Extra Golden the other night at the Floristree in the H & H Building in downtown Baltimore. Despite a bill of heady, contemplative, experimental music that preceded the DC-based band, the crowd was chomping at the bit to see them when they finally hit the stage well past 1am. It’s still cold and rainy here in Charm City, but these guys made it feel like summer with their sunny blend of Kenyan benga music and guitar-driven psych rock.

Busy P is the man. This design pays homage to one of the world’s most enigmatic pop-culture mavericks. The French maestro is almost single-handedly responsible for the success of both Daft Punk and Justice. The Midas Touch design references this with the golden robot (representing Daft Punk) and the golden cross (representing Justice) — the idea being that everything Busy P touches turns to gold.
