Louis C.K. Live at the Beacon Theater (outtake)
Comedy albums can save a long road trip. For one, they give you a break from your dashboard-drumming and lyric-slaughtering companions. They also keep the driver awake at lower volumes than music, letting those who want to sleep tune out.
Careful though, Louis C.K. may make you laugh so hard you crash anyway. I enjoy his awkward truths, and that like me, he explicitly wears black tee shirts on stage in a vain attempt at hiding his profuse sweating. I also appreciate that he too despises corporate distribution for his art. This video is from a special he self-released:

Gonzo Chicago: documenting the local music community
Every rock band worth its drumsticks has crammed onto moist rugs in the corner of damp basements to play through questionably grounded amplification for dozens of overzealous under-agers spilling piss-water beer onto any gear that still works. It is the most inspired and enjoyable time in a band’s existence. Gonzo Chicago documents these moments and more all over the city.
Will Phalen and the Stereo Addicts: I Can’t Run
The songwriter in me listens for interesting melodies and lyrics. The instrumentalist in me listens for unique sounds and chord progressions. Will Phalen’s You Don’t Ask (I Won’t Answer) is the sort of genuine song that stops me from listening for something in particular. As is this song above.
Chicago band Bailiff: Little By Little live at Pritzker Pavilion
In early 2011, I met fellow Chicagoans Bailiff through our mutual friend and engineer, Jon Alvin. We share a love for the blues and rock & roll, but cook them with different recipes. I feel blessed to guest with them on occasion, and learn something every time we hang out. I was moved during this song at the majestic Pritzker Pavilion, looking out at the Chicago skyline on a beautiful summer afternoon.

Yat-Kha are a stunning Tuvan band that combines throatsinging and traditional folk music with straight-up rock. Their album ReCovers is an awesome collection of covers of songs by Led Zeppelin, Joy Division, and Motörhead among many others, reflecting their general approach to music on the rest of their impressive catalog. Despite the modern elements, the Moscow-based group still conjures the vast steppes and endless skies of the small Russian republic in southern Siberia.
