Chicago band Bailiff: Little By Little live at Pritzker Pavilion

In early 2011, I met fellow Chicagoans Bailiff through our mutual friend and engineer, Jon Alvin. We share a love for the blues and rock & roll, but cook them with different recipes. I feel blessed to guest with them on occasion, and learn something every time we hang out. I was moved during this song at the majestic Pritzker Pavilion, looking out at the Chicago skyline on a beautiful summer afternoon.

Chicago band Mutts with their song Pray for Rain

Chicago’s Mutts have just released their first full-length, Pray for Rain. The album’s call to arms is band leader Mike Maimone’s Tom Waits-style growl, which is accompanied by fuzzed-out organ, greasy guitar hooks and brutal drumming.

Matt Woodward

While observing my surroundings in Chicago, I sometimes long to see the decaying structures we’ll abandon once our planet gets rid of us. Matt Woodward’s ominously oversized works help ease this unrealizable urge. When I see them, I’m standing on the quark-sized speck where optimism converges with reality. Read more

Loyal Divide’s awesome Vision Vision music video

Loyal Divide are a criminally unknown band from Chicago. They have a sound all their own: soft, almost sensual male vocals, paired with intense electronic noises and underpinned by triphop style rhythms. The video for their single Vision Vision is secretly live action.

Gonzo Chicago: documenting the local music community

Every rock band worth its drumsticks has crammed onto moist rugs in the corner of damp basements to play through questionably grounded amplification for dozens of overzealous under-agers spilling piss-water beer onto any gear that still works. It is the most inspired and enjoyable time in a band’s existence. Gonzo Chicago documents these moments and more all over the city.

Will Phalen and the Stereo Addicts: I Can’t Run

The songwriter in me listens for interesting melodies and lyrics. The instrumentalist in me listens for unique sounds and chord progressions. Will Phalen’s You Don’t Ask (I Won’t Answer) is the sort of genuine song that stops me from listening for something in particular. As is this song above.

Louis C.K. Live at the Beacon Theater (outtake)

Comedy albums can save a long road trip. For one, they give you a break from your dashboard-drumming and lyric-slaughtering companions. They also keep the driver awake at lower volumes than music, letting those who want to sleep tune out. Read more

My friend Hermonie Only is a bad-ass artist who seems to have a good handle on symbols and icons, using them boldly and unabashedly. Her abstract and geometric work also have a heft to them that make them stick in the mind even without literal, translatable meaning. Read more

Fashion blogger Tavi is biting, witty, articulate, and stylish for any age. The fact that she’s only twelve makes her kind of over-the-top amazing. Already an accomplished photographer and astute critic of all things wearable, the sarcastic pre-teen is probably sick of being described as precocious, but she’s the very definition of the word.

Hmmm, I don’t know if it’s the extra strong coffee I’m gulping down, or that faintest slither of feel good sunshine that’s creeping through the blinds, but this song is making me feel mildly euphoric, and that kinda works right now. Play it loud. Play it through headphones. And imagine you’re decked out in day glo polyester with a dramatic burst of velvet lining. Damn, my feet just can’t stop from dancin’.
