Alex Warble

Alex ‘Warble’ Harrison was my neighbor here in lovely midtown Memphis for a few months. As we became friends, I grew to love his maximalist drawings and paintings. Warble, along with Steve Pereira and an interchangeable array of Memphis musicians, make up The Warble. Check out their latest album, Predator, TN.

El Marko by Mr Gnome

Ok. I will admit it; I have fallen for him (them). Mr. Gnome, will you marry me? I heard El Marko off of their Madness in Miniature. Apparently this is Mr. Gnome’s third album. Their guitar and drum heavy sound, coupled with hauntingly psychedelic lyrics, leaves you thirsting for more.

Tiny Furniture: a movie by Lena Dunham

Tiny Furniture is about a 22 year-old recent college grad returning to her artist mother’s TriBeCa loft with a virtually useless degree and a dying hamster. Chloe Aftel’s artistic vision is to ‘create new worlds filled with beauty and emotion through the medium of moving pictures’. Her photography initially consisted of one-frame movie stills, but it evolved into less production design-heavy, but still highly evocative, scenes with a strong narrative. She prefers to shoot with Polaroid film. With each shot and each subject, she attempts to capture an effortless sensuality and intimacy, focusing on the precise moment the image took place. Recently formed hip-hop duo, Rootbeer (Pigeon John and Flynn Adam), have just dropped a super fresh piece of audio pie right in your kitchen. Influenced by artists such as MGMT, N.E.R.D and A Tribe Called Quest, Rootbeer offer up an edgy and unfeigned lyrical style. Turn up their debut release, The Pink Limousine EP, to eleven. You’ll find it impossible not to make shapes.

For an industry that spends so much time fratenising with musicians, few designers ever admit to being primarily influenced by the music industry itself. Electronic Poet are an exception. Read more
