Global housing shortages are on the rise, and our little friends, the hermit crabs, are impacted too. Thanks to a collaboration between Makerbot (whose 3D printing machine Replicator was featured last month) and TeamTeamUSA, Project Shellter was born. Hermit crabs can now move into biogradable plastic shells instead of making dangerous bottles or shotgun shells their homes.

Inspired by Hayao Miyazaki and Satochi Kon anime and post-war Japanese advertisements and graphic design, illustrator Richard Wilkinson also brings in touches of cinema and 50s poster design to his elegant, line-driven images. His careful palette of muted colors creates a glowing, mysterious atmosphere. Read more

After more than ten years using Photoshop, illustrator Daniel Mackie has abandonned it in favor of pencil and watercolour. Recently winning Best in Book in the Creative Review Illustration Annual 2011, judge Kuchar Swara said: ‘I was really impressed with the level of detail and attention to the figure and its distortions of scale’. All of Mackie’s illustrations are now hand-drawn and painted on 300gsm Saunders watercolour paper. Ok, so I’m wearing this sweater right now. How could I not. The damn thing shares the same name as me. Well, kinda. My parents threw in an ‘o’ into my name just to confuse the life out of people. But that’s a whole another story. The Zoltan is comfortable, soft, and colorful. It has ‘no fortune-telling capabilities’, but the ‘lightweight progressive color stripe scheme has an undeniably funky 70s vibe’. And it does. Yeeha. Now, where the hell is my bell bottoms and Grateful Dead vinyl?

Now this is fun. This 3D watch dial actually jumps to life. The dial is a modern version of the 19th century art form of lithophanes: carved porcelain sheets that, when lit, deliver astoundingly detailed images.
