New art by Natassja Brodie

I’m a firm believer in the theory that creativity is at its peak in the hours where the normal sleep soundly. I’ve often found it either hard to sleep, or hard to separate a vivid dream from reality, and have just learnt to work with it. Inspired by my dreams, sleeplessness and love for characters, my art has been described as ‘quirky, bold, colourful and a little unsettling’.

Most of my work is created digitally but after my recent solo exhibition at The Vic Bar I’ve been commissioned to paint some of my ‘dark-hours-inspired’ art with acrylic paint on canvas, salvaged pre-loved skateboard decks, used snowboards and other recycled objects.

The uber-hip French producer M83 has compiled a Secret Playlist for us in which he props Brian Eno, Julee Cruise, and Tears For Fears’ Head Over Heels: ‘This song was the biggest influence for my new album. Our track, Kim and Jesse, takes a lot of inspiration from 80s bands like Tears for Fears. This is one of my favourites’. Read the rest of M83′s Secret Playlist.

Tyr are a great Viking metal band from the Faroe Islands, a tiny nation between Greenland and the British Islands. They sing in Faroese, Danish, and English, crafting amazingly catchy songs inspired by Dream Theater, mid-era Metallica, and Black Sabbath.

They may be incredibly eccentric, but these ten inch platforms are physical proof that it is actually possible to create somewhat aesthetically pleasing heels out of elephant faeces. UK-based artist INSA designed the shoes as part of a recent art exhibit at Tate Britain which features the individual work of various artists responding to Chris Ofili’s controversial The Holy Mary elephant dung painting made fifteen years ago.
