Horror illustrations by Suehiro Maruo
Ultra Gash Inferno is one of those short manga collections that really stuck with me over the years. Think Chinese Propaganda art meets Bataille’s Story of the Eye. It’s base, grotesque, ludicrous, senseless and yet so beautiful at the same time. I finally got around to watching Suehiro Maruo’s loosely animated movie Midori (Mr. Arashi’s Amazing Freak Show — watch below), whose sub-Hanna Barberran roughness and geek love content has a likeness to the naivety and brutal yum to some of the best outsider art.
