In the past, my conceptual portrait illustrations have been mostly inspired by music. But I’ve always been drawn to the things that most people turn away from, and I enjoy illustrating these subjects in a style that is both beautiful and occasionally disturbing. I have just begun a new series called Phobophilia, in which I take common fears and fetishize them. My work is often slightly erotic, and with this project, I plan to turn fear into something a bit more appealing.

Cynthia von Buhler’s Speakeasy Dollhouse is a biographical tale of murder, mafia, and intrigue in New York City told with handmade dolls and sets, in conjunction with an immersive play. It was initially set for a two-night run, limited only to it’s Kickstarter supporters. However, due to overwhelming interest, von Buhler added a Halloween show, and plans to add more dates and locations in the new year.
There Won’t Be Any Crows by Nesey Gallons
The first time I heard Nesey Gallons, I knew his music was special. The melancholy warbling in his voice can transport a listener into another world, where everything is timeless and tragic. His lyrics are stories of lost loves and pining for a childhood that’s long gone. Though he’s been recording music for over ten years, he began to get national recognition when he toured with the Elephant 6 Orchestra in 2008.
Present: a new film from director Joe Chang
Filmmaker Joe Chang never pictured himself making a film like Present, but after meeting some very interesting and entertaining people (Nesey Gallons, Faith Callaway, Mariana Templin, and Teaadora Nikolova), he decided to combine them with some of his favourite things and see what happened. The result is a beautiful story about an awkward performance artist and his sister taking a road trip to revisit their childhood hometown. Featuring a soundtrack written and performed by Nesey Gallons, the film is hoped to be shown at some festivals in 2012.

Ok, so maybe it’s the extra-strong Brooklyn coffee I’m drinking or perhaps its that the pine coated goodness of Christmas is well and truly in the air, but I’m kinda excited this morning as my wife has just launched her website, Feature Shoot, which is a resource for photo editors, art directors, industry professionals, and pretty much anyone who appreciates good photography. It’s a great way to discover new photographic talent and the website is already bursting with interviews with up-and-coming American photographers alongside that of established photographers who have completed a project or whose work has taken on a new direction.
There’s something quite attractively kitsch about the Lucky Dragons’ latest release, Dream Island Laughing Language. It’s undoubtedly unusual, and not too friendly on the ears, but something warm and fuzzy keeps creeping out of the broken drum rhythms and looped vocals. It’s a mish-mash of jangly folk licks, Squarepusher-style drum ‘n bass with a few Coco Rosie-esque experimental sound effects thrown in: intriguing, original, and fairly hard to describe!
