Jape: an electro-rock band from Dublin

Jape are a electro-rock band from Dublin, Ireland featuring members of Redneck Manifesto, Somadrone and VisionAir. Their music makes me want to do the highland jig and their videos are top notch. I got to know these guys after using a Redneck Manifesto song in an Etnies Video. One of their songs, Phil Lynott, was almost nearly voted as Ireland’s Christmas single 2008.

The gritty documentary photographs of Claire Martin

Claire Martin got her start as a social worker and turned her efforts towards her camera. And it shows. Her nitty gritty subjects and intensely intimate reportage of squatters and junkies won her the Magnum Foundation 2010 Inge Morath award. Her work meshes between fine art, documentary and contemporary photography. Read more

Phenomenal bike riding by Danny MacAskill

What’s there not to be said about this Scottish street trails rider. 15 million hits on YouTube can’t be wrong. He’s an absolute beast and has mega skills on a bike. This video is a journey from Edinburgh to the Isle Of Skye and was filmed by his room mate Dave Sowerby. Make your granny watch it.

Redneck Hippie: a documentary about gun fanatic Jeff Pierce

English film-maker Philip Bloom really nails it here, with this short documentary on Texas old time BMX legend and gun fanatic, Jeff Pierce. He’s part redneck, part hippie and part nutcase! I hate guns, but really enjoy nerding out on the camera work here. Shot with a Red Epic and Phantom Flex, the slow-mo on this film is absolutely tremendous. If you are wondering where all the empty bullet shells go, Pierce recycles them into bicycle valve caps.

It’s hard to find a misstep on the full-length debut from Melbourne band, Children Collide. The Long Now doesn’t sound like a first album: its mature, yet completely varied sound and lyrical concept makes it feel like something you’d expect from a band on their third or fourth album (you know, after the ‘cursed’ second album). Children Collide are most definitely in control, something that could have been lost while working with big-name producer, Dave Sardy. It’s rare that you pick up a CD and feel like the band has decided on everything, right down to the artwork that encases their killer album. We threw guitarist-singer Johnny Mackay a few questions about how they managed to wrap everything up in such a … errr … tight little package. Read more

My friend and fine artist Sara Wolfe sent me this link of Chicago based artist Diego Leclery. He created this flash animation Panda, to celebrate the recent Beijing Olympics. He initially said he would take it down after the closing ceremony, but it is still up, so watch this cool one before it’s gone!
