Portrait series on former LA gang members
I was looking at a documentary recently about jails in the US and the gangs that rule inside. One group was the Latino crew. So I went online looking for more info and photos and stumbled upon this series of portraits of former LA gang members. The photographer Adam Amengual shot the series for Homeboy Industries, a non-profit organisation in LA helping these former gang members establish a new life.

Crazy guys making beautiful things. Raar means ‘strange’ in Dutch and this word is their central point of gravity with everything they do. Oh and purple must be their favorite colour.
Famous people photographed in their homes
Taking a look in other people houses is something we all like to do, especially when those people are famous, well-known or just plain interesting to known. Todd Selby — aka The Selby — takes creative portraits of famous people by photograping them in their home or working place. It’s so interesting to see how the minds of these people reflect on their surroundings or vice versa. Read more
Korehira Watanabe: one of the last ancient sword makers
Korehira Watanabe is one of the last 30 ancient sword makers left in Japan. It’s a trade he’s been trying to master for the past 40 years and it’s only in the last five years that he says he’s been succeeding in capturing the craftmanship of the late Koto period (794 – 1333).

Oh man, close your eyes if you will and transport yourself to a place far, far away; where disco is in, polyester is up, and everyone bows long and deep to the gravitational pull of the almighty afro. Sister Self-Doubt by The Shakes takes me there. It takes me front and centre, feeling that slippery, incidenary groove as it crunches my spine and works its way to my feet. Hmmm, the feet. It’s always in the feet. And now I’m dancing and twisting, onwards and upwards, like a manic spinning top thinking nothing of today and even less of tomorrow.
Listen to The Shakes track, Sister Self Doubt.

The mining and refining that provides the world with precious metals is also extremely damaging to the environment – each ounce of gold mined generates 30 tons of waste, much of which is toxic. Philadelphia-based Rust Belt make unique, finely crafted earrings, necklaces, and bracelets entirely from re-purposed and recycled materials. The processes they use to make their pieces are also environmentally sound, and they are shipped in beautiful, re-purposed glass bottles.
