The floating garden islands of Amiens
This is a patchwork of floating garden islands located in the Northern French city of Amiens. It’s a method of farming practiced in the region since the Middle Ages. A flower and vegetable market is held on Sundays, but the real experience is taking a tour of the canals by boat. Magic.

Habibi: a new graphic novel by Craig Thompson
The long awaited follow up to Craig Thompson’s multi-award winning graphic novel, Blankets. Habibi revisits familiar personal themes for the author but set in a foreign land. An epic accomplishment on all fronts, taking close to seven years to complete, it’s an intense visual experience, another moving tale of love and a thoughtful look at the close relationship between Christianity and Islam.
Video for Japanese band Mono’s Follow The Map
In early October, I was lucky enough to experience the Japanese post-rock instrumental quartet Mono, accompanied by the Holy Ground Orchestra as part of the Melbourne Festival. A sweeping, emotive 90 minute spectacle of both joy and sorrow, made stronger by the accompanying full orchestra and the perfect venue of the Forum Theatre.

Nintendo fan art by Niklas Jansson
I’m not sure exactly what Niklas Jansson does. Something in game development, I think. But I’m certain we would have gotten along as kids. He has a thing for redesigning all the best Nintendo games, like Metroid, Rygar, and Mega Man; he loves vintage Lego, robots, and table top games; and is a master painter and illustrator in both traditional and digital mediums.

Austin-based photographer William Hundley loves juxtaposing completely absurd and unrelated objects. Whether it’s fabric-draped people in mid jump or chihuahuas and Easter Island heads standing on cheeseburgers, Hundley takes an almost Dadaist joy in making random, giddily puzzling images. Read more

The coolest band in Indonesia? I think so. White Shoes & The Couples Company describe themselves as a small band that is ‘influenced by Indonesian movie soundtracks from the 70s and inspired by the acoustic spirit of 1930′s classic jazz musicians’. But I like to think of them as carrying the torch for artists like Benny Goodman, Tahiti 80, and The Cardigans, all at the same time.
Listen to their track, Super Reuni.
