Tim Wendelboe Coffee Shop in Oslo, Norway

I don’t know much about art, but when I look at the Mona Lisa I can tell it’s pretty good. The same goes for my relationship with coffee. I’d heard that this coffee shop in Oslo was good, but I wasn’t prepared for the macchiato they sold me to taste like it was in 3D.

I was so impressed I even went home and bought the Aeropress Coffee Press (made by the same people who make the Aerobee!) they were using behind the counter, although I have so far failed to reproduce this experience at home. There must also be some skill involved, which is just another reason this place is so awesome.

Mekons: Memphis Egypt

These guys (and gals) are possibly the last (and best) band standing from the 1977 UK punk revolution. Genre-bending rockers who never thought not knowing how to play an instrument should stop you from having a band, Mekons have evolved into one of the most creative and consistently relevant outfits of the last three decades. They mixed art school punk with country, reggae, pub rock, electronica, and whatever genre they came across long before anybody thought those subcultures were cool, Mekons care nothing for labels, genre, or even commerce. All they care about is the music, man. Also, drinking.

There is Power in a Union: a book by Phillip Dray

Anyone who was having trouble choosing sides in this year’s showdown between Wisconsin teachers and those who wanted to take away their rights to collectively bargain should be forced to read this. Dray’s book compellingly illuminates the story of the American labor movement, warts and all, and reminds readers both what first necessitated unions and why we still need them today, even though it may be too late. Donkey Kong Country Returns: Eruption Trailer

I like my Xbox just fine. I like Call of Duty; I enjoyed Red Dead Redemption. But for my money, the most purely enjoyable video game of the last year features the most misunderstood hero of the Nintendo-verse: Donkey Kong. Read more

This is a friend of mines’ blog. Her name is Nirrimi. She takes really amazing photos, and she makes great little films, too. I did the music score for one a while back. Her blog is like a novel that just plays out slowly but happens in real life. Well worth reading if you’re into photography and good, honest writing. Read more

Shortstack are a Washington DC band that not many people know about outside of the the city. They recently released an EP of covers with some sweet choices on there — The Kinks, Captain Beefheart, and The Pupils, among others. Once again a band takes different styles, sounds, and time periods, and owns it like an extra finger.

Listen to the Shortstack track, House On Fire.
