My Korean Deli: Risking It All For A Convenience Store

I am not Korean, nor am I a white dude married to a Korean looking to buy a deli for his in-laws. But this book is great and it’s about some stereotypical shit. Coming from a life lived in neighborhoods of color, where delis like these are everywhere, it was interesting hearing their side of the story. I almost wanted to apologize for my self-righteous Spike Lee-fueled justification for all the 40’ I stole growing up. Nah.

F.E.D.S: The Wall Street Journal with less white people

Do you feel like you are Big Meech? How about Larry Hoover? Never really got the Alpo references of your favorite rappers? Try reading F.E.D.S: Finally Every Dimension of the Streets. For a while before F.E.D.S, I really grew tired of magazines like The New Yorker, New York Magazine and Time Out New York that only gave me a few dimensions of the streets. The day I first read F.E.D.S, I knew we were meant to be together. Read more

Never Leave Me Alone by Nate Dogg (RIP)

Nate Dogg is one of the reasons I rap: ‘It’s a G Funk-era coming down to a gangsta twist’. When I heard he passed, I got really nostalgic. I grew up hard-headed. Being arrested sucks, regardless of the length of your stay. I, like two other rappers, have been in this situation. Cop cars have zero sawg. This song always played in my head every time the cuffs clicked shut. Vintage Snoop on the cameo is classic. The whole vibe is really open and innocent.

Wicked tattoo art by Jondix

Friends. Family. Choice. Tattoos. Beauty marks and freckles. You get the point. In the spirit of art, customization and individuality, getting inked up is a major part of my life. While I am not quite on Wiz or Weezy status with the tats, I definitely have a few pieces that I cherish. One is from Jondix, an amazing artist from Barcelona who makes Stateside cameos only a few times a year. Read more

Jonathan Bergeron, also known as Johnny Crap, does shirts and merch for horrible bands such as Escape the Fate and Avenged Sevenfold, but he’s got skills, so I won’t hold it against him. His ink drawings look like wood-block prints with their detail and precision. Read more

Some of these Free Crappy Portraits are not that crappy, and regardless of the skill of the artists, they’re all incredibly entertaining.

Listening to Mum’s fourth album — Go Go Smear the Poison Ivy — for the first time, I was awash with sentimentalism. Amidst carnival trumpets and burlesque beats, there’s a sense of this being a bohemian rhapsody. Perhaps it’s the mix of cello and brass with experimental electronica. Or maybe it’s just the soft vocals that cascade over playful, imaginative sounds. Whatever it is, it’s totally brilliant. [see also Sigur Ros' Heima]

‘Les gens courageux’ is French for ‘the fearless ones’, and if you wear this slim-fitting white v-neck combed cotton t shirt, with the Vaughn de Heart logo on the left sleeve, you’ll be fearless, too. Yes, we promise.
