Clyde Common: Portland, Oregon restaurant

My favorite Portland restaurant. It’s part of my dream week spent in Portland and the best part of this restaurant is that the chefs and the bartenders are the most passionate people about food and drink.

They have great local wines on list (Washington and Oregon wines happen to be my current favorite), but you can also bring your own bottle, should you have stumbled onto one of the many great stores nearby. I love sitting at a long table with other diners and overhearing how good everyone’s meal is. Mine included.

The Quiet Revolution

I love this girl’s bejewelled work. I first spotted the bear in Air Canada’s En Route magazine, and think her birds and tiger work is extraordinary. Very special. Read more

Silent Dust

A few months back, I was randomly contacted by UK production duo Silent Dust (named after an episode of The Avengers), who planned to release their self-titled debut album this Halloween. I loved that they had enough conviction to start their own label (none60) to give the album a home, in this day and age, when music is hardly a money-making business. Read more

After more than ten years using Photoshop, illustrator Daniel Mackie has abandonned it in favor of pencil and watercolour. Recently winning Best in Book in the Creative Review Illustration Annual 2011, judge Kuchar Swara said: ‘I was really impressed with the level of detail and attention to the figure and its distortions of scale’. All of Mackie’s illustrations are now hand-drawn and painted on 300gsm Saunders watercolour paper. This website hosts a nice collection of quirky, sometimes mind-boggling, sculptures from around the world. There’s a certain Dali-esque feel to a lot of them – those surreal, dreamy hallucinations turned into a warped reality. I’ve always been a sucker for art that really catches you out for a few seconds, and these certainly do that.

I saw a real wizard. His name is Twig Harper. He shoots crazy waveforms from his fingers, aided by magic-infused electronics. I am now a frog. If you see him, tell him I no longer wish to be a frog.

It’s a recession and I don’t need to buy any more handbags. But these? Umm, too awesome to pass. The ad photos are as fantastic as the products. My favorite is Pursuader. But don’t go to the airport with one! Read more
