The whacky children toy art of Ken Kagami

Ken Kagami creates extremely suggestive yet hilariously clever drawings, sculptures and installations from children’s toys and other kitschy miscellaneous items. I admire his ability to execute loud, in-your-face, often disgusting concepts while at the same time maintaining a childlike simplicity and lightness.

What fascinates me most is the juxtaposition of cute/silly with psychosis/darkness. My most recent body of work consists both of videos made up of remixed YouTube findings, as well as digital collages created with the children’s computer program KidPix. Read more

Yvette’s Bridal Formal website

This website is unintentionally genius, and this has nothing to do with Yvette’s bridal wear. Upon entering this website, beware for you are actually entering another dimension, one that is equally overwhelming, fantastical, and obnoxious. Click on the links and see where they take you. Endless possibilities and sweet tunes to go along with each page, so turn up the volume on your computer for the full experience.

Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen’s Gimme Pizza Song (Slowed Down)

This video embodies my favorite themes of cute and psychotic. I love that all that was done to the original video was that it was slowed down. One simple, minor alteration had the power to completely morph the feeling that this song evokes from innocent and mundane to absolutely insane and creepy.

Brooklyn based illustrator Autumn Whitehurst is a Lost At E Minor favourite. She recently told the Web Esteem website about her interest in capturing human figures: ‘I have to use a photo reference to comprehend how light falls on a three dimensional form but the figures in the illustration rarely look anything like the photographs because myself and my friends are not such lean sleek glowing forms. It’s one of the biggest challenges but is also really enjoyable and is probably the bit that I have to get most creative with. I plan to completely abandon photo references for the work in which there is no rendering at all, and it’ll probably result in something a bit wild’.

Loving the rough, dramatic style of Ben Quilty’s paintings and sculptures. There’s something absolutely terrifying about them. Read more

Ever seen a beard you can’t trust? Yes, me too. Well, here’s a witty Beard Chart visualisation that can be used as a guideline to help us all out.

I had the pleasure of seeing Duran Duran play a few weeks back in the balmy drizzle of New York’s Central Park. I always thought the guys had more cheek than they were ever given credit for. But don’t be fooled! For a band so rooted in the immediacy of disposable pop, they wrote some timeless songs, none more so than The Chauffeur.

To be honest, I can’t bring myself to care about the new TSA scanners in airports. It’s not like they can’t already see and know everything about you already. However, I love these garments with the 4th Amendment printed on them in metallic ink so that the text show up clearly on scanners.

One part wilderness, one part fashion, all Poppy and Moe: a vintage-inspired knitwear brand with a fabulous line-up of hand-drawn graphics. We love this brand for the nature undercurrent in their designs, all printed on chic silhouettes: a fox with flowers meets an off the shoulder pullover, a cat goddess living on a deep-plunged racerback tank.
