Goth Or Not

An internet classic. I will always love this site. The best ones are the 13 year old kids with peacock blue hair dye who pose in front of the fireplace when their parents are on date night. I’m usually quite generous with my ratings.

Incredible video for El Perro Del Mar’s Change Of Heart

This is not particularly new, but it’s still one of the most exciting things I’ve ever seen, so it feels new. The song and video are so perfect. Pure gold.

Darren Sylvester

An exceptionally talented photographer and musician, I was lucky enough to have Darren Sylvester take the photograph used for my record cover. His album is incredible. He is touring the US this month, too.

Melbourne-based designer Ben Williams has spent twelve years in the interactive and design worlds, doing soup-to-nuts campaigns for clients and brands including Australia’s largest music festival, the Big Day Out, Toyota, Sneaker Freaker Magazine, Vodafone, and Ford. Oh, and apparently he’s also a whiz with a ‘gently used set of Ginsu Knives’. Really! Some people have all the fun. Read more

Scottish artist Robert Montgomery sneaks about at night plastering his own stark poetry over billboard ads. Nice idea, though the cover-up is so flawless you might think the hijacked pieces are really ads themselves.

Breakbeat duo, Evil Nine’s new album, They Live!, is one of the standout releases of the year. They Live! is powerful second album after 2005′s, You Can Be Special Too, its gruesome lyrics paying homage to all those misunderstood zombies out there. The duo — Automatom and Pardytron — compiled a Secret Playlist for us, writing about their eight favourite songs right now. Their first selection? Why, Toto’s Africa, of course [listen below]: ‘The epitome of smooth music, words can’t express how much this song rules! When the synths come in and the drums echo in the night, I’[m immediately transported back to my youth. Some people might say this is a guilty pleasure, but I don’t feel no guilt. I just stick it on and bask in their mellow might’. Read the rest of the Evil Nine Secret Playlist.

The Los Angeles musician, Ariana Delawari — aka Lion of Panjshir — is half Afghan and half Sicilian and makes wonderfully enlightened weirdo folk rock. I hope she takes that as a compliment! Her music is delicate and powerful and she is a pure artist. Everything she does has that magic light in it. She made her new album partially in Afghanistan, and many of the lyrics deal with the continued oppression of people’s liberties by the Taliban.
