Donald Glover
I love being busy, and I think I do a pretty good job at it, but Donald Glover puts me and every other workaholic out there to shame. He’s hilarious on television and on stage, he makes kickass music, and he tours the country doing a blend of both. I’m not exactly sure how he managed to keep his energy and creativity levels up, but I’ll have what he’s having.

CBC Radio 3 online broadcasting
Full disclosure, I do a lot of hosting work for these guys, so I’m biased. But I started as a fan, and I still think that Radio 3 is light years ahead of anyone else when it comes to internet broadcasting. If there’s any justice, in a few years when internet radio is the norm, people will look back at what Radio 3 is doing now and recognise that they more or less laid the tracks for the whole damn thing.

I hit a point a couple of years ago where I started to feel over saturated with entertainment media. I got fed up reading reviews and articles and just kind of stopped seeking it all out. The one exception was the AV Club, which provides consistently insightful and compelling commentary on all manners of entertainment. Read more

I have a reputation among my friends as the guy who likes the dumbest movies. It’s well deserved, and I never turn down the chance to eat a giant bucket of popcorn while things explode on an enormous screen in front of me. Meek’s Cutoff is the slowest movie I’ve ever seen, and seems like something I would hate, but something about it is so captivating that I’ve seen it twice and plan to keep going back. It’s kind of like There Will Be Blood, if you dialled it down about 12 notches.

I’m so digging the work of Copenhagen illustrator Michael Rytz, with his spontaneous, sketchbook-like work. Characters, like vintage cartoons, parade around, fleshed out through glorious textures and scribbles punctuated with the occasional clean, bold, illustrator-like element for contrast that hits the spot.

Remember how the forgotten (and the forbidden) places attracted you as a child? Well, I think I never got past that phase. I haven’t had the courage to do any big scale explorations yet, but while I’m planning for it, Forbidden Places is a good place to see what other people are finding in hidden places around the globe. It’s very eerie and intriguing. Read more
There’s not much one can say about an artist who has recorded more than 400 albums — even if you manage to listen to a large portion them, there’s a good chance you’ve missed something. Good thing, as far as I know, R. Stevie Moore is the only person who has released that many records (Daniel Johnston may come close), many of which were cassette-only or printed in limited numbers. Virtually unknown for decades, the obsessive music geekdom that has reached a fever pitch as this generation of fans has allowed Moore to keep his relentless flow of Zappa-esque weirdness, power-chord pop, tongue-in-cheek ballads, satirical new wave, and whatever else we’ve most certainly missed, gushing out into the universe.
