Apple Butter with Saint Andre
Saint Andre is a triple creme cow’s milk French cheese in a powdery white, bloomy skin of mould (thank you, Wikipedia). There is a C-Town (run of the mill NY supermarket) on Graham Ave in Brooklyn that has it for $3.99 which I am convinced is a mistake since they have cheddar for $8.99 in the same bin.
Apple Butter is a kind of preserve/jam/spread that is smooth, a bit more runny than a traditional jam. This combination is my dominant bourgie snack-time go-to for 2011.

Zorch is a two-piece from Austin with some French or Canadian in them. One guy plays vintage Moog and 73-key Rhodes, his whole set-up shaking and rocking, while the drummer, equipped with a Bobby Brown My Perogative-era headset mic, gets jazz wild on a rickety, shitty sounding kit. Their tunes are analog opuses, with big changes and hooky lead lines.
Woodkid’s awesome video for his song Iron
The video for Woodkid’s Iron looks like it had the budget of a 1999 Limp Bizkit video. There is intense slow-mo, explosions, a white horse, and I think someone’s famous girlfriend is in it holding an owl on a really sweet medieval-looking arm piece. Definitely reminiscent of the heyday of MTV impact.

Up and Down and Top and Bottom exhibition
This new series of alternative sculptures by Brendan Lott uses the wall as part of the ‘canvas’, so if you were to buy one of his pieces, he would have to recreate it on the actual wall in your home. Read more

Low-Rise is a precarious assemblage of free-standing stacks of staples representing a complex city skyline. Peter Root, the British artist who had the idea for this interesting piece of mini architecture, apparently has a thing for highly labour-intensive, mantra-like procedures when creating art. The aptly-named macro photographer, Eco Suparman, is responsible for this stunning shot of a praying mantis appearing to ride a miniature bicycle off into the sunset. Of the photo, the Borneo-based Suparman says: ‘I was practising my macro photography, and there are a lot of small insects there. I was focusing on taking pictures of the mantis when I noticed the curled plants nearby. Straightaway, I thought it looked like a bike. But I couldn’t believe my luck when the mantis walked over and climbed onto the plant’.

Some of these Free Crappy Portraits are not that crappy, and regardless of the skill of the artists, they’re all incredibly entertaining.
Cloud Control have just unravelled a newly recorded track, Gold Canary, from their forthcoming 2010 album. It’s straight up pastoral Blue Mountains goodness. I actually heard it live earlier this year and it sounded quite rad.

Now this is fun. This 3D watch dial actually jumps to life. The dial is a modern version of the 19th century art form of lithophanes: carved porcelain sheets that, when lit, deliver astoundingly detailed images. When the pusher is activated, the dial springs to life in 3D, with an LED light and afterglow effect. Read more
