These plastic models of painstrokes, cast by conceptual artist Roxy Paine to look like the twist-off parts that come in a model kit, take the notion of ‘paint by numbers’ to a whole new level.

Paine has long played with the conflicting notions of mass production and nature/art-making – he made another model kit for an abstract sculpture, and he has made realistic plastic and steel replicas of psilocybin mushrooms, a field of poison ivy, tree branches, and boulders.
