Animated puppetry style video for new Snorkel single

The Deadskin video was made by a friend of ours, Shaw Petronio. He has previously made videos for the band Sparks and Ben was involved in the live VJing performance on some of their tours. With a nod to Terry Gilliam, Shaw uses a cut-up animated puppetry style against a backdrop of film collage to convey an alienated souls’ indifference to a major catastrophe.

Denseland: Scrape It Up

Denseland’s album Chunk is one of the most impressive to these ears in recent years. They are trio made up of David Moss, Hannes Srobl, and Hanno Leichtmann. Moss is familiar through his work with John Zorn and other ‘downtown players’ during the 80s and early 90s in New York and this recording carries strong traces of this DNA, blended with a kind of post Can/Czukay sound/rhythm world.

Step Across The Border: Morning Song

Step Across The Border is a film that follows Fred Frith and various musicians playing, rehearsing, and improvising, interspersed with interviews, conversations and observations shot beautifully in black and white. It’s an amazing film about music which manages to combine incredible performances with moments of the everyday as he travels through various locations. This is a short clip from the film that features Iva Bittova and Pavel Fait.

Three piece, cLOUDDEAD, who formed in Cincinnati at the tail-end of the last millenium, fuse traditional hip hop beats with indie, electronica and psy-rock overtones. Doesone and Why?’s layered, poetic vocals cover the personal, political and social elements of their lives; and, above all, their flatout rejection of traditional musical boundaries makes them a quirky and unique act.

I’ve never worn a bow tie in my life, but if I was to, this is where I’d get one. Nicholas Ruiz is a Queens-based artist who handcrafts limited-edition bow ties. Each piece focuses on a specific theme. Email him to snatch one up quick (if he has any left!) Read more
