Scilia rings from Five and Two
I can’t say I’m a huge fan of the crystal craze. Crystals, like triangles, are ubiquitous these days as visual shorthand for something vaguely mystical. I love these Scilia rings from Five and Two because, rather than evoking the nurturing qualities of Mother Earth, they seem to have tumbled out of an acid nightmare future where everything is synthetic.

I have been to several of Caroline Chen’s exhibits at the Delaware Center for Contemporary Arts. Her sure but guazy painting style reminds me of Wolf Kahn’s work. If painting is feeling, I can imagine her gentle spirit being funneled through brush to canvas. Very fairly priced. And on my short list for acquisitions.
My first impulse, when I’m staring at a blank canvas or sheet of paper, is always to draw or paint a face. I think this is pretty elemental, since faces are pretty much how we primarily interface with each other. Brian Kokoska also seems to have the same impulse, creating terrifying, perverted, and whimsical figures with mask-like mugs in his images. Read more

Things continue to improve for New York’s metal scene, if Batillus are any indication. The sludge/doom trio from Brooklyn offer crushingly heavy, down-tuned and down-tempo instrumental riffage that sounds like what a mutant that has crawled out of Newtown Creek might have on his iPod. The band recently added vocalist Fade Kainer of Inswarm (Jarboe’s touring band) to its line-up.
