Drawings of animals by Maria Elina

It’s funny that as alienated as we are from animals in this modern world, people still feel compelled to draw them as if it were one of our core instincts. Argentine artist Maria Elina does excellent drawings of anthropomorphized animals. Excellent, I say. Trust me, I look at the internet all day. Read more

Surreal sculptures by Ben Wheele

Honestly, writing about art (and music, for that matter) is kind of an awful task because good art speaks for itself. Such is the case with Ben Wheele’s surreal sculptures and videos. I use the word ‘surreal’ to describe 90% of the art I like not because I’m a lazy writer, but because there’s really not much more to say, and I like surreal and grotesque shit. Read more

The demise of our beloved print medium is a harsh reality that a lot of independent magazines have been dealing with for the past five years at least. Beijing-based band Hanggai write original songs in the traditional folk styles of their Mongolian ancestors — throat-singing, horsehair fiddles, lutes — spearheading an Asian version of the old-time revival. Though it’s only through the digital age that the rest of the world can access this beautiful music, it makes you want to slow down and reflect on what we’ve lost as a species. This stuff makes every flavor of the month indie band seem vapid and meaningless.

Luxury goods have been getting a bad rap lately, and for good reason. Now I don’t know how you roll, but we don’t know many people who enjoy covering themselves head-to-toe in someone else’s initials. Yet for some reason designers think that diamante logos and monogrammed tapestries are the best mediums to communicate their brand. So it’s just as well LA based eyewear label Barton Perreira doesn’t play by the rules. Starting out less than a year ago, you won’t find their designs getting over-excited by insignia. Instead, these guys hand make their frames in Japan to rely on precision, fit and design. And that’s the way it should be.
