Brilliant Blackpool photo series by Garry Cook

If there’s one place in Britain you must visit only because it represents everything this beautiful green and pleasant land is not, it’s the jaded seaside resort of Blackpool. A garish, neon-lit roller-coaster ride of thrills, spills and bellyaches. It’s where the pensioners mix unhappily with young boozing Brits on hen and stag parties. These are my images.

Albert the Pug and the Thief Dog

Add a funky little black pug to some dark Scooby Doo-style hand-painted backgrounds and what do you have: a freakishly enthralling illustrated children’s book. The Albert the Pug rhyming story mixes a spooky darkness with enthralling modern-day fables to make you people wonder, laugh and think about their own behaviour. Read more

Locked In by Kerry Wilkinson

It was a shock to discover that there is a journalist called Garry with two ‘r’s who is integral to the story of Locked In. I’m a journalist called Garry. Is it me? Coincidence or not, Locked In is a self-published sensation: a detective novel which has defied the odds to climb its way up the book download charts, swatting aside the big-name writers along the way. I taught the writer, Kerry Wilkinson, how to play squash.

I wonder how many guitar picks Jimi Hendrix used while he was alive? Probably not the 5,000 it took Ed Chapman, a notable British mosaic artist, to put this plectrum portrait together. It recently sold for £23,000, which will be used for cancer research. Read more

Perhaps you already have a drink named after you. Maybe your favorite band is tantamount to a few ounces of hot mountain swill. Maybe your ex is an 8 oz. glass of rot-gut bathtub gin. If not, you let your fantasies run wild at Drinkify.

Music isn’t necessarily a serious venture. It’s almost funny when you find some you know will grate to dust the stiff upper lipped critics of the world. Every now and then I like the type of sound that hops around the edge of your ears without working its way into your brain and messing up the seratonin levels. And Californian 16-piece tropical-ska-pop group, Still Flyin’, do just that for me. It’s a good laugh, quite catchy, and an awesome live experience so I’m told: especially with the sun out, a can of cider in your hand and a bunch of grinning faces skanking around you.
