China Comics and Animation Museum

This is set to begin construction next year in Huangzhou and looks amazing. If this is where China wants to go as global superpower, I am in. It looks like an Opera House for comics and the Dutch firm MVRDV, who won the pitch, designed the complex around the shape of the speech bubble. It will have three comics libraries, interactive light displays on the outer surfaces.

Craig Thompson’s new comic book: Habibi

I was lucky enough to do a graphic novel residency in Florida last year and Craig Thompson was one of the master artists. He’s an easy going, inspiring guy, and got me psyched about inking with brush and expanding my drawing repertoire. Read more

Nobrow: producing wonderful independent comics

Nobrow are leading the field in making independent comics with stunning production values. They took the mantle passed down by Chris Ware and just ran out of the stadium. Each book is totally different and seems to hold the soul of the artists. File under ‘nothing like superheroes’.

Lars the last Viking Goes to the End of the World comic

This is my comic I’ve been working on for the last five months and the first release of Sixty40 Press. It’s a mini epic saga of Lars the Last Viking’s quest as he fights the oppressive forces of apathy and death-metal pine trees in a raid against the world. Joined by his faithful pig, Olaf, and written in rhyming couplets, you know you want to find out more about this comic and how it was made at my process blog.

Vintage Kids Books My Kid Loves is a great resource for people looking for gift ideas or simply for those who dig the artwork in out-of-print and esoteric children’s books from years past. The author provides reviews from the perspective of a parent, not merely a hobbyist.

Originally hailing from Kendal, Cumbria and now based in Leeds, the Wild Beasts foursome are the next hopefuls for Domino Records, who sent the group out to Sweden to record their first album, Limbo, Panto, released on June the 16th. The new single — The Devil’s Crayon — shimmers in wide-screen around a sense of location, melody and wonder at the scale of things. Indeed, it sounds like the theme song to a new kind of very English road movie.
