Photo series on the children of rural Bengal

Children in Rural Bengal are in a much worse condition socio-economically as compared to the disadvantaged children of urban areas. The plight of these children is virtually unknown to a large mass of people, which makes the situation critical. The political tensions of the recent past in West Bengal is also responsible for making life a little more tougher. While this essay does not particularly focus on the hardships of rural children, it lays emphasis on those innocent ones whose lives and futures are being played with … by politicians. Read more

Turtles Can Fly: first film made in Iraq after Saddam’s fall

Les Savy Fav drummer Harrison Haynes also makes some pretty incredible art that plays with the assumptions and materiality of photographic processes and images, using collage, painting, and installation elements. Read more

My friend R James Feaver has done some amazing photography whilst living out in some of the poorest areas of Romania. Some of my favourite shots are the way he tells the story of Erica and her three children, who live on a rubbish dump in northern Romania. It turns out that the Internet was invented for cute animals as much as it was for porn. All these four-legged nobodies suddenly have our attention, and all they have to do is sneeze or fall asleep or act like they’re talking for us to fawn all over them. Heeding the growing chorus of people calling for these furry hacks to be cut back down to size, Fuck You Penguin aims to keep the egos of goats, puffins, moose, and pretty much every adorable creature on earth in check.

Last weekend I went to the Golden West in Baltimore to check out the What Cheer? Brigade, a marching band from Providence. I wasn’t expecting much, but when they opened with a cover of Slayer’s Raining Blood, my knees buckled. I think I could hear a musak version of that riff, and I’d still bang my head. The rest of the band’s set was just as riotous, with people dancing so hard, you’d think we were at Mardi Gras. I haven’t had that much fun at a show in ages.

Minimalist cool meets urban grunge. This is Upper Metal Class, fine metal jewelry inspired by architecture, construction, math and science. Upper Metal Class already scored major points with their chic every-day friendly line, but there’s a major bonus to the brand: they are uber-environmentally conscious, constructing all goods from recycled metal in a wind-powered studio.
