The 90-Second Newbery Video Contest
by Do you have a favorite Newbery Medal book? From Charlotte’s Web to The Giver, there are tons of classics that we have all grown to love. James Kennedy, the author of the young adult book, The Order of Odd-Fish, has teamed up with the New York Library and the Chicago Public Library, to create the 90-Second Newbery Video Contest.
All you need is a video camera, a Newbery Medal book, and 90 seconds. Once all the videos are collected (they are due by October 17), the winners’ videos will be shown at the 90-Second Newbery Film Festival held at the New York Public Library on November 5, as well as the Chicago Public Library on November 16.

Browsing through the CD shelves looking for a good mix to help fuel my road-trip back to California, I spotted a spooked-out psychedelic jazz score to a 70s Czech horror film. Abounding with references to the natural world and its corresponding rhythms, Australian artist Eleanor Yap creates the most incredible tapestry-like drawings. Yap’s rorschach-styled images, through their soothing symmetry and allegiances to nature, really seem to put the mind at ease somehow, despite their intense density and lively colors. I must say I was truly disappointed in discovering that her online shop is at this time closed! Sigh.
