Olek’s incredible crocheted art

Bikes, text messages, objects found in her apartment … there seems to be nothing that artist Olek can’t crochet.

Originally from Poland, Olek (born Agata Oleksiak) now lives in New York where she has taken her obsession with crocheting to a new art form. But don’t mistake her work for just yarn bombing. Her crocheted work can be seen covering everything from people in body suits to even a life-size model of her apartment.

Sporting original dance moves that put today’s pop dancers to shame, the Nicholas Brothers show off their self-taught skills in this amazing scene from Stormy Weather. And the leap frog at the end? Wow.

David Maisel’s awesome X-rays of art photo series

David Maisel’s photoseries entitled History’s Shadow explores art objects from antiquity in a new light. He photographed x-rays of the Getty Museum’s permanent collections that had been taken for the purpose of art preservation. His photos create a detachment from the original artwork, while illustrating how each piece is still alive. The results are serenely beautiful. Read more

Trailer for the independent film Martha Marcy May Marlene

The independent film Martha Marcy May Marlene is now at the top of my Must See list. Doesn’t it look amazing? It’s about a young woman (Elizabeth Olsen) who escapes from a cult and is trying to rebuild her life. It just came out in limited release in the US. The rest of us will have to wait a little longer.

I just caught up with Portland artist Stephanie Simek about her unconventional work and living situation: ‘I live in Portland, Oregon, in a former Hare Krishna temple that my partner Adam and I turned into an art and music space called Rererato. I’ve yet to find out what they put in the water in Germany that generates such a consistently rich stream of good electronica. Carrying the torch at the moment is Hendrik Weber, aka Pantha du Prince, whose early 2007 release, This Bliss, landed on my doormat with a deep bass-kick and hasn’t left my iPod since. Read more
