Here I Am: by Australian director Beck Cole
Set in Adelaide, this film about an Aboriginal woman leaving jail and struggling to reconnect with society and her daughter isn’t the most amazing story ever told. It lacks big twists and big laughs. But that would only subtract from this lovingly told tale.
Film can do so many things, and one of the most important is to put the viewer in a story and life that is otherwise outside of their everyday. Here I Am does this superbly, showing a life that most of us only ever see from the outside, and are often too quick to judge.
