He has a major touring retrospective and he’s only 50 this year. He won a MacArthur Genius grant; his work is in the collections of all the major museums; and he has been featured on the television program Art 21. I am thrilled that you are putting the word out about him but let’s celebrate his formidable accomplishments and the success he has achieved (which is remarkable for an artist of any race), rather than making him out to be a marginal figure, which he most certainly is not. While he may have endured challenges along the way that his white counterparts have not, he is hardly underrated.
