by Who said typefaces had to be static? Whoever it was certainly didn’t tell Hussain Almossawi from the Skyrill Design studio who created this incredible Fluid Type in which each character in the set has both a static and an exploding animation version. We love.

I absolutely love the spreads that typographer Sam Winston created for New York Times magazine. He contrasts very griddy layouts with organic ones and uses red type to highlight important information. His experimental, deconstructive use of type is remarkable, and his layouts feel fluid and alive. His work is refreshing and inspiring. Read more

Beautiful old school typography by Herb Lubalin
Herb Lubalin’s typography looks clichéd and a bit played out if you are catching it right now, until you realize that most of the designers riffing on his letters were born after he died. Lubalin’s typography isn’t subtle. That isn’t to say it isn’t well balanced or poorly kerned (it is). It’s more that it is loud, fearless, and clever in ways type hasn’t been before or since. His particular cues are popping up more and more lately in “cutting-edge” graphic design. Avant-garde indeed.

Sean Avery has found a novel use for a (near) obsolete media form. Instead of selling his old CDs for $1 a pop at the local pawn shop, the artist creates stunning sculptures of animals in motion using just shattered shards and a healthy imagination. Read more

We could write something pithy here about how much artist and copyeditor Guillaume BlanchetI must love the sensation of, erm, perpetual motion, but we won’t. Instead we’ll let him tell you what motivated his recent feat of endurance: ‘I love being on a bike. It helps me feel free. After 382 days spent riding through the streets of Montreal, being sometimes quite cold, sometimes quite hot, and sometimes quite scared, I dedicate this movie to you, Yves Blanchet’.

Now he’s a prolific painter, creating really demented portraits of women. I hope that’s not an indication of how he feels about his son. Read more

What a wonderfully grown up ethos of punk is to be found in the latest effort by New Zealand’s Stolen Girlfriends Club. I saw sequin, lace, leather, denim, tulle, rhinestone and what appeared to be heshen, breaking all the rules of taste but nevertheless making me very, very happy. Read more
