Alexander McQueen’s Savage Beauty exhibit

I have always enjoyed exhibits related to fashion, and I was not only taken by the Gladiator-style Alexander McQueen designs in this particular showcase, but also by the choice to place these items in mirrored boxes. There is something modern, almost cold, about the exhibition, but the choice allows for the soft pastel colors in the clothes to seem that much more feminine.

It feels like the contrast really brings out what the actual pieces represent. It’s like ancient Rome meets 2011, and the masculinity of the designs with the choice of soft, feminine colors offers an interesting juxtaposition. Savage Beauty is the perfect title. The exhibit is currently at the New York Metropolitan Museum of Art

Treehouse Freese Road by Rhea Garen

I love this image by Rhea Garen because of the mix of reality and fantasy. The scene of a small cottage-like house in the woods immediately brings me back to some of my favorite childhood stories, like Hansel and Gretel or Sleeping Beauty. I feel like this could have been the woodcutter’s home, or the hide-out where Sleeping Beauty was taken by the three fairies, Flora, Fauna and Merriweather. There is a certain whimsy yet depth, candor yet mystery, all present in this one shot.

Soldier’s Angel off the new Stevie Nicks album

There is something for me that feels very settling about putting on a Stevie Nicks’ record. Day to day, from one experience to another, each of us needs those few things that ground us, and remind ourselves of where we’ve been and where we dream of going. As I write this, I’m playing a track from Stevie’s newest album In Your Dreams, entitled Soldier’s Angel. Read more

Pictures by Women: Photo by Cindy Sherman

I like the raw quality of this photo by Cindy Sherman. There is a visceral expression in this character’s eyes and pose. It’s a mixture of many emotions at once, and I am completely drawn into the story behind the photo, wondering where this girl is and why. Read more

Ok, so maybe it’s the extra-strong Brooklyn coffee I’m drinking or perhaps its that the pine coated goodness of Christmas is well and truly in the air, but I’m kinda excited this morning as my wife has just launched her website, Feature Shoot, which is a resource for photo editors, art directors, industry professionals, and pretty much anyone who appreciates good photography. It’s a great way to discover new photographic talent and the website is already bursting with interviews with up-and-coming American photographers alongside that of established photographers who have completed a project or whose work has taken on a new direction.

Bay Area duo The Human Quena Orchestra sounds like a skyscraper falling in slow motion with their scraping, crashing, screeching drone pounded out of guitars, samplers, and circuit-bent electronics. Listen to their track Progress below.

If only we could swap out every ubiquitous North Face jacket that sits tight on the weather-beaten frames of far too many Manhattanites for one of these wonderful creations by Japanese artist, Kosuke Tsumura. The city would be that much more of an interesting place. Called Final Home, this parka has 44 zippered pockets and is part of Tsumura’s collection of ‘post-apocalyptic streetwear’, designed as a respite — and insulation — from the stresses of modern urban living.
