Arthur Russell: That’s Us/Wild Combination
I discovered Arthur Russell’s music about four years ago when the reissues were getting around. I was hooked. He collaborated with everyone from Phillip Glass to Allen Ginsberg. He was big in the New York downtown scene, as all my favorites are. He sadly died of AIDS in 1992 at age 40, cutting a brilliant career too short. This is from his album, Calling Out Of Context.
Golden Ghost: Russet, Citrine, Olive and Black
I love songs where the words and music stand up to each other and work together and force the other to do better. This song has that fight, I can never figure out whether the music or lyric is pulling me closer. Golden Ghost is a poet, a sage and a beauty.
