Grandpa Shea

Grandpa Shea is a Melbourne-based artist wielding a pencil like no other. His work is confident, emotional, at times dark and filled with black humour.

One pencil and an eraser, such simple tools to produce such intricate, moving and thought provoking work. I have had the pleasure to watch Shea hone his skills from an early age, as I am lucky enough to be the one to call him son. His new work is outstanding.

Some may feel squeamish at these materials, but using human parts in jewellery isn’t a new thing and was at its height in the Victorian era, when Queen Victoria went into mourning and it became a fashion statement.

A Name Is A Label: made from second-hand clothing

What to wear to my openings is always a difficult one. Should I dress-up or wear the paint stained clothing worn producing the work? This time my problem was solved quickly as I discovered the perfect dress from A Name Is A Label. Their pieces have a sculptural appearance, constructed predominantly from second-hand clothing. The label is about ethical, new-century awareness.

Samantha Everton’s latest exhibition, Vintage Dolls, explores ‘history, race and culture through magic realism’. Of the series, Everton says: ‘I was inspired by the innocent act of children playing dress ups and the way they re-enact adult behaviour, concepts and themes, without preconceptions or judgement’. The show runs at the Dickerson Gallery, Melbourne, between March 4-22 and at the Dickerson Gallery in Sydney between April 1-19.

Scottish artist Robert Montgomery sneaks about at night plastering his own stark poetry over billboard ads. Nice idea, though the cover-up is so flawless you might think the hijacked pieces are really ads themselves.
