The Places In Between by Rory Stewart

I recently went to Afghanistan on a major photo mission. It was the most interesting experience I’ve had in my professional work as a photographer. And challenging in far more ways than I had imagined. In preparation, I did a fair amount of research about the Taliban, recent politics, and the various kings and warriors of the past who raped and pillaged. Read more

Awesome 1970s anarcho-punk by Crass

This anarcho-punk band from late 70s London were an example of rebellious music aimed at England’s class politics at that time. I still see crusty kids dressed as punks wearing the Crass emblem and logo, hoping they understand the story behind the look. This song, Walls, is one of the few anarcho-punk disco tunes I’ve heard of. The Crass Records label put out the band, KUKL, which featured Bjork on vocals at age 15. Awesome.

The sky is falling. The world is ending. How do we deal with it? Since we can’t nail the CEOs and bankers that got us into this mess (instead, we’re bailing them out), let’s make light of the misery of people who make a living abetting the broken system.

When you first hear William Elliot Whitmore’s voice, it’s hard to believe he isn’t a grizzled old man. The baritone-voiced one-man-band does rousing bar room ballads on the banjo and guitar that are sure to send shivers down your spine. On closer listen, Whitmore’s voice does seem slightly affected. But like Tom Waits before him, his voice is likely to age like a good scotch.

Listen to the William Wlliot Whitemore track, Dry.

With waiting lists and pre-orders already taking place, there’s enough competition for this label without sharing it with the world. But what the heck. A little bit of fashion karma never goes astray. So listen up ladies. If you haven’t heard of Aussie label Maurie & Eve, you need to pay attention. Because their current collection, ‘End of the Line‘ is due to sell out as soon as it drops during October. Read more
