Rebecca Fin Simonetti
I remember seeing some of Rebecca Fin Simonetti’s paintings in a friend’s room a few weeks ago and thinking they were really amazing. I was really glad someone was doing straight-up portraiture.
The other night, Simonetti had a small solo show, Are They a Threat, open upstairs from me at the Penthouse Space, and I was quite impressed by her almost graphic novel-inspired, moody drawings and paintings of female figures hanging out with goats or staring back at viewers with tired eyes as if they were displaying the psychic and physical wounds inflicted on them by the world.

Drawings of animals by Maria Elina
It’s funny that as alienated as we are from animals in this modern world, people still feel compelled to draw them as if it were one of our core instincts. Surreal sculptures by Ben Wheele
Honestly, writing about art (and music, for that matter) is kind of an awful task because good art speaks for itself. Such is the case with Ben Wheele’s surreal sculptures and videos. I use the word ‘surreal’ to describe 90% of the art I like not because I’m a lazy writer, but because there’s really not much more to say, and I like surreal and grotesque shit. Read more

All of Mackie’s illustrations are now hand-drawn and painted on 300gsm Saunders watercolour paper. Read more

UK-based one-man-band Sieben has a new album out: As They Should Sound. Frontman Matt Howden builds songs with a loop pedal and a violin, which he uses for rhythm and melody. His sound is wonderfully sophisticated and cabalistic, with a particularly British sense of lyricism.
