This show of new paintings by Mark Grotjahn is up at Anton Kern until June 25. If you find yourself anywhere near New York, it’s a must see.
Even if you’re not into the imagery (or maybe, more precisely, his implication of imagery- faces and masks), the texture of this work and the thick smell of oil paint hovering in the gallery’s vaulted rooms is worth the trip. I’ve found myself staring at these paintings several times, and there is just something mesmerizing about them to me. I’ve left the gallery each time feeling inspired to go home and get to my own art making, which I think says a lot.
