Larry Norman: Something New Under The Son

Larry Norman has been described as the father of Christian Contemporary Music, but please don’t hold that against him.

In reality, he (reportedly) smoked lots of weed, fathered illegitimate children, and slept with his guitarist wife. He also made some of the most fucked up albums I’ve ever heard, taking the sounds of Neil Young, The Rolling Stones, The Beatles, and Simon & Garfunkel and mixing it with the good word. Charles Thompson of the Pixies lists him as a hero. (‘Come On Pilgrim’ is a line from a Larry Norman song)

Todd Hido’s House Hunting photo series

San Francisco photographer Todd Hido’s book House Hunting introduced me to long exposures as more than just ‘something cool a camera can do’. Taking photos of suburban houses at night, Hido portrays neighborhoods with an isolation and loneliness that’s hard to find in photography.

American Suburb X

American Suburb X is best photography resource I have ever seen. Ever. I spend hours here. Interviews and features on contemporaries like Todd Hido next to a Robert Frank book I’ve never seen. Robert Adams, Gary Winnograd, William Klein, Stephen Shore, all just the tip of the iceberg. Read more

Julia Martin

Nashville painter Julia Martin has an undeniably distinct aesthetic. One of the most seemingly intuitive painters I know, her paintings always seem to contain a narrative that’s visible, yet just out of reach.

We invited Greg Gillis, aka Girl Talk, who aside from being the DJ of the moment is also the remix whiz behind tracks from Beck, Tokyo Police Club, and Grizzly Bear, to give us a rundown on the songs he’s wearing out right now for our sister site, My Secret Playlist. He started off by propping Beyonce’s anthemic single, Single Ladies [listen below]. Go figure! ‘This is one of my favorite Beyonce tracks ever. It has so much energy, and the chorus gets dark in a great way. The clapping never stops. The video is a flawless execution of a performance style clip. It’s perfect’. Beijing-based band Hanggai write original songs in the traditional folk styles of their Mongolian ancestors — throat-singing, horsehair fiddles, lutes — spearheading an Asian version of the old-time revival. Though it’s only through the digital age that the rest of the world can access this beautiful music, it makes you want to slow down and reflect on what we’ve lost as a species. This stuff makes every flavor of the month indie band seem vapid and meaningless.

Méduse is a self-initiated project that I started while studying in London. I was printing a jellyfish inspired series of t-shirts and bags which I was selling or giving to friends. The concept has evolved a bit since then. I try to find time to launch two series’ a year, available only online.

The newest giclee print from Rebel Unlit, Inquiry into Jellyfish, is an adventure in mixed media. We love the subtleties of this piece, which could be missed at first glance: the transparencies, the color distress, the foreground texture. We’re also a pretty big fan of that jellyfish. Inspired by Haruki Murakami’s The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle, this limited-edition piece is printed on cotton matt archival 310gsm paper and is available now in the Lost At E Minor online store.
