The Dude Whisperer

An advice column for women wanting some help understanding the mystery of dudes, but an hilarious and thoughtful read for anyone, dude problems or no. Part of why I like it so much is that it can be really funny without being at all snarky or mean or cooler than thou. It’s funny and dirty and humble and good natured, which is a weird and refreshing mix.

Mikael Kennedy

Mikael Kennedy is one of my favorite photographers. From the first time I saw his work, I had the feeling not just that I wanted to see more of it, but that I wanted to be in it: to go to those places, to find out who those people are in his photographs. And the more you see of his work, the more the experience of it deepens because he continues to shoot many of the same close friends and family members over the years. So you start to experience the work as an ongoing story.

Martin de Thurah

Martin de Thurah’s videos have a mystery to them that I think is amazing. At times, it’s very much on the surface: a strange costume, elements of sci-fi. But often there’s just something indescribably beautiful and weird in the way he frames an apple tree, in the way he launches you straight into a story without exposition, in the way he makes you feel as if something is off but you can’t figure out what it is. Appalshop: for Appalachian music, culture and history

Appalshop, in Whitesburg, Kentucky, is a great resource for anyone interested in Appalachian music, culture and history. It’s dedicated to giving voice to people of the region to tell their own story. You can watch lots of great performances and clips from documentaries they’ve made on their website and stream their radio station as well. One of my favorites is WMMT.

Katharina Trudzinski builds geometric paintings and precarious-looking sculptures and installations seem like the product of a mind ceaselessly arranging and rearranging the chaos of the universe into elusive and ephemeral order. Read more

I’ve been a big fan of Babak Radboy’s designs for a while now. I love how complex and time consuming some of his pieces look and how fresh and original they are.

I daresay Tim Berners-Lee is somewhat less than impressed that his glorious vision of uniting the planet and furthering our collective knowledge via his creation of the world wide web has led to this on-going collection of (currently) 25089 pictures of filthy old mattresses. Dumped in the street. All over the world. Let’s give ourselves a round of applause people.

At a gig last year Foals were forced to abandon their last song halfway through because the stage was stormed by too many crazed fans. The reason behind the hype they’re creating, both on stage and in the normally merciless media, isn’t immediately clear upon first listen: the sound is less than friendly on the ears, and they don’t employ the same catchy hooks and melodic chorus patterns that shoot your average band to fame in their early years. My Baltimore friends might appreciate this t-shirt homage to Billy Ripkin, brother of Cal Ripkin Jr., whose 1989 Fleer card showed him holding a bat with the words ‘fuck face’ written on it.

Now this is fun. This 3D watch dial actually jumps to life. The dial is a modern version of the 19th century art form of lithophanes: carved porcelain sheets that, when lit, deliver astoundingly detailed images. When the pusher is activated, the dial springs to life in 3D, with an LED light and afterglow effect. Read more
