The changing face of New York City
|As a five year resident of New York, I often wonder about the changing face of the city and how much of the character has been stripped away. This atmospheric series of photos from the How To Be A Retronaut website have me pining for a less sanitised New York, when the old school charms and sensibilities were still intact. Remarkably, over the ‘eight years it took James and Karla Murray to complete this project, one third of the stores they featured have closed’. Sad.

New York car space being sold for 1 million dollars
Only in New York? We think so, though those in Tokyo may disagree. According to that reputable news source, the UK’s Daily Mail, a ‘developer of a luxury condo building in New York City’s Greenwich Village has listed a parking spot for $1 million’. That’s right. And the spot only holds one car, measuring in at an underwhelming 12 feet by 23 feet. So is it even semi-reasonable to ask this much? The New York Post thinks not. They’ve determined that ‘driver would have to rack up a $115 illegal parking ticket every day for 24 years before reaching the cost of this luxury garage’. Ah, the joys of deep pockets.

The nice thing about black metal is that it’s so hard for it to be co-opted. Between its often extreme ideologies and its inherently abrasive sound, it’s hard to imagine anyone trying to sell you a pair of sneakers with it. Even as some bands like Dimmu Borgir and Cradle of Filth have wormed their way into the mainstream, the vast majority of black metal fans and bands out there are happy to stay in the filthy pits of the underground. Free bird boots are handmade customized military boots, applying recycling to fashion in a new way. Created by young New York-based designer, Stacey Howard, the boots were originally collected from military bases in the South. As Howard says: ‘It felt most natural to my aesthetic to use vintage native American garments and paint to refabricate the boots. Using a soldier’s boot and an Indian’s blanket, I wanted to merge two opposite and patriotic styles and use them in the most organic way’.
