Olaf Breuning

Olaf Breuning’s work is illusory, magic, and funny. He is a Swiss-born artist based out of New York whose explosion of influences (from Slasher B-movie kitch to satanic cults) always manages to create something engaging.

A friend and I were saying the other day that he doesn’t seem to shy away from giving the viewer a glimpse into each work’s creation, creating a rare sense of participation.

Michael Hurley

Michael Hurley is one of my favorite musicians and I always try to mention him when I get the chance. His records are honest, funny, and heartbreaking (always simultaneously) and I feel like he fills in the gaps where the sadness pours out. My personal favorites are Hi-Fi Snock and Uptown and Armchair Boogie, as well as Be Kind To Me [above].

Search & Destroy: 1970s counter-culture zine

V. Vale is the man behind punk rock publishing staple, RE/SEARCH, whose zine, Search & Destroy (started with a $100 loan from Allen Ginsberg and Ferlinghetti) helped push counter-culture in 1970s San Francisco and the West Coast Scene. Vale and his publishing company helped to expose different sides of writers, like William Burroughs, J.G. Ballard and Brion Gysin.

Nico Muhly

Nico Muhly is a young classical composer and arranger based out of New York City. I first came across his work in relation to arrangements he composed for another artist, Sam Amidon’s record, All Is Well, and one day found myself riding an elevator with him. I was too shy to say hello.

I find it remarkable that each of these wall-hanging trays feature a bird’s head on a human body and appears to be enjoying the finer things in life. When the human race is wiped out, it’s certain that birds will rule the world.

Feashcaaps articulates a combination of characters and symbols, creating rich imagery and scenes, and giving voice to some entities, weirdos and mutant creatures which are sometimes shouting obscene words and other times whispering love words, all dedicated to the world we live in. Read more

Oh man! Now I’ve seen it all. An entire blog dedicated to cupcakes, those perfect little bundles of sweet, sweet goodness. Hell, my mouth is watering just looking at them. What will they think of next? A blog about pretzels? Ha! Oh, wait a minute. Damn!

Despite their over-the-top rockisms (ridiculously monstrous rigs, smoke machines, and high-wattage light show), Jucifer backs the bombast up with some colon-bursting heaviness. The duo from Athens, Gergia, take 90s-era grrl rawk and combines it with slow, plodding, sludge metal like High on Fire on Vicodin.
