Play Me I’m Yours art installation in Austin
A month ago, I began noticing these random upright pianos popping up in the most odd places all across Austin: on pedestrian bridges, running trails, in front of downtown building. It’s a beautiful idea for an art installation, using a city known for its music, culture and artistic identity, and painting it with its own brush. Kudos Luke Jerram.

Mumford and Sons: part of Railroad Revival Tour 2011
What a great concept: music and musicians traveling through the great American landscape on a train. Kind of like the circus rolling in to town. And Mumford and Sons is one of my absolute favorite bands these days. I saw them for the first time on a whim with about 60 other people at the Mercury Lounge in New York during the CMJ Music Festival two years ago. Absolute brilliance.

Manchester Orchestra’s album Simple Math
We were on tour one Winter and it seemed like everywhere we went, we were either playing the day before or the day after Machester Orchestra at the same venues. Vans and trailers passing in the night. Best part about them, too: they are neither from Manchester nor are an orchestra. They are actually a five-piece band from outside Atlanta, Georgia.

Video for the The Damnwells song The Great Unknown
I’ve been a fan of The Damwells for about as long as they’ve been a band. This is a ridiculously simple yet captivating video for the song The Great Unknown, the first tune they released off of their most recent record, No One Listens To The Band Anymore. Man, Alex Dezen sure knows how to write a good song.

I am really into Hong Kong action flicks from the 1980s and 90s. When I first moved to New York, there were a handful of curious friends who were also interested in watching movies such as City on Fire by Ringo Lam, which Reservoir Dogs was based on. How did they find videos like thus? At the legendary Kim’s Video in New York City. These days, City on Fire can be find online, and Kim’s is history. But all the videos that entertained the film geeks of this city for more than twenty years have found a new home in, wait for it, Salemi, Sicily. Yes, the southern island of Italy. Kim has recently relocated there, as this sad but heartwarming story about him in yesterday’s New York Times reveals.
Castevet are a promising new experimental black metal band out of New York. They have a much more complex and technical approach than other bands of this ilk, revealing post-hardcore and death metal influences as evidenced by guitarist Andrew Hock’s work in deathgrind outfit Biolich and Boston jazz/death/doom band Ehnahre.

Inspired by Caspar David Friedrich and American Space Travel, the Das Nebelmeer print by Rebel Unlit features a unique collage of mountains and space shuttle smoke. We love this surreal piece, and its partner in crime, the Der Wanderer print. Both works are giclee prints on cotton matt archival 310 gsm paper. There are a number of these — or were, this fall — in Iowa City, as well. Definitely a different person responsible. Loved it.
