Icky art by Kristen Ferrell
Kristen Ferrell’s artwork is, as her bio puts it, beauty vs. grotesque’ and I’ve always been fascinated by it. I’m not an art critic, but my kids refer to her work as both ‘really beautiful’ and ‘really icky’, which I think sums it up nicely.

Any song that starts off with the intro, ‘This is a song about the first time I went to a strip club with my drug dealer’, you know is at least going to be interesting. Turns out, it’s a pretty killer song. He’s a beekeeper, he knows how to keep ‘dem bees.

Glitter and Rust greeting cards by Kendra Marable
Kendra Marable is an old friend who’s been one of my favorite artists for a long time. She actually did a record cover for me once. She’s been doing a line of greeting cards called Glitter and Rust which are fantastic. Personally, I am a lover of altars and I think she has a lot to do with that.

I’ve heard Old Canes described as ‘fuzz folk’, which is pretty apt. They make me happy in a Neutral Milk Hotel sort of way. They are working on a series of 7″s, all about shape shifters, which I’m super excited about.

Fashion blogger Tavi is biting, witty, articulate, and stylish for any age. The fact that she’s only twelve makes her kind of over-the-top amazing. Already an accomplished photographer and astute critic of all things wearable, the sarcastic pre-teen is probably sick of being described as precocious, but she’s the very definition of the word.
Anyone who thinks black metal is too rigid and narrow a genre to have room for innovation would do well to check out Lifelover, a Swedish band that defies every convention of black metal while still remaining miraculously kvlt. The sextet wafts between languid, hallucinatory grooves that channel Iggy Pop and latter-day Cure to unhinged freak-outs that sound as if they’re emanating from the deepest, coldest forests of Norway.
