The Radiant Child: documentary about Jean Michel Basquiat

This is a recent documentary about my longtime obsession, Jean Michel Basquiat, made by his friend Tamra Davis, who knew him well enough to film him at the time working and in conversation. Footage of Jean Michel Basquiat is, sadly, rather rare, so I savour every second of this documentary. Check out the trailer, some of which is very aptly spliced to Dizzy Gillespie’s Salt Peanuts.

Jonathan Lethem’s book: The Fortress Of Solitude

Jonathan Lethem wrote his book, The Fortress Of Solitude, very loosely about his childhood growing up in Brooklyn as a young comic book obsessive. It pulls in themes of race, street art, childhood dynamics, the seeming endlessness of urban street life and lots of music and comic book references. It’s no coincidence that the two main characters are called Dylan and Mingus.

Barbiero and Ghaphery: wild improvised jazz

This is a brand new project from Silver Spring by Jazz bassist, Daniel Barbiero, and reed and wind player, Jimmy Ghaphery. All the pieces are recorded in one take and totally improvised, ranging from hard-edged full-on improvised blasts, to reflective bowed bass and flute. This is some of the best improvised music I’ve heard in a very long time.

Doomed Bird Of Providence

Will Ever Pray is the debut album by Doomed Bird Of Providence, which is the project of Australian musician Mark Kluzek, telling tales of sea faring, stories of mutiny, and horrific piracy in Australian waters back in colonial times. Dark, nautical tales, the furthest away from sea shanties you could ever hope to get. Brutally magnificent.

Double Parlour is an art collaboration between Ernie and Cassandra Velasco, who live in the San Francisco Bay Area. Their art dolls have a vintage feel to them, but with a modern twist. Sad looking, young ladies carry monsters in their arms as pets. Monsters have arms that seem almost too long to hold up. Characters in fun, striped swimwear don’t seem like they’re having the least bit of fun. Yet, they are immensely fun to gaze at. Read more

If ever there was an opinion needed on the current Hip Hop scene, this is the one everyone should look to. More than likely, this homie is going to diss, if not one, then all of your favorite rappers and probably offend you. But I dare someone to say he is not speaking the truth. Plus, whose voice better to hear it in than that of Ghostface, Na’mean? I can read this blog for hours with a smile on my face.

The Phenomenal Handclap Band is a collection of musicians and artists from Lower Manhattan and Brooklyn who perform live as an eight-member powerhouse, creating an eye-popping spectacle more akin to a spiritual church revival than a rock show. We have their single, 15 to 20, available for free download via the Music Download section of Lost At E Minor.

Love your Converse All Stars? Well, designer Daryl Van Wouw has taken his obsession to the next level, creating an entire pant and shoe configuration. Yes, it’s a very interesting design. But practical? That depends entirely on the whims of the individual.

Made from 100 percent organic cotton and eco-friendly, this super soft tee celebrates a sinister world of kaleidoscopic colours and ripples of psychedelia, of serenading Queens, of dancing flamingos, of unimaginable euphoria. It’s all the work of Sydney label, Das Monk and it’s available through the Lost At E Minor online store for just US$40. Now, there’s one hell of a Christmas present, even if we do say so ourselves!
