Charlie Tippie
Charlie Tippie stirs hip hop, rap and electronic with just the right mix of old school soul and beats. His song, Alone Tonight, makes me want to jump on a plane to New York City for his show on March 19. For now, I have to settle for his seven track Mute album on repeat, each song taking me to different places.

Nico Muhly is a young classical composer and arranger based out of New York City. I first came across his work in relation to arrangements he composed for another artist, Sam Amidon’s record, All Is Well, and one day found myself riding an elevator with him. I was too shy to say hello.

We love the soulful sound of New York’s Jessica 6, who have a debut album, See The Light, out now. Check out their new track, Prisoner Of Love, ‘which bridges electro and freestyle’ and features guest vocalist Antony, below.

Meyhem Lauren’s video for Got the Fever
In New York City, hip-hop and graffiti run as tight as Wu and Tang. Queens rapper Meyhem Lauren’s new music video for Got the Fever celebrates this hallowed union in glossy HD. Directed by rising photographer Tom Gould, the video catches the city’s finest street artists bombing landmarks across the boroughs. It’s also a beautiful example of the low-budget, DSLR cinematography that’s fast becoming the next major street art.

Greg “Craola” Simkins is hands-down one of my favourite artists. His work has been an inspiration from the very beginning. Incorporating a delicate blend of the surreal, graffiti stylings and more recently, classical art, the fluid movement of his compositions and the beautiful use of light and colour have had me entranced for years now. Seldom has black humour been done so well. On the surface, this film about the everyday lives of some unusually mundane characters, sounds extraordinarily boring. But it is instead a cutting comment on the absurdity and drudgery of everyday life. The characters try to break out or change their lives without success, and the results are bleak and hilarious. Is the soul colored or is it black and white? I find this quite confusing, since I believe that a colored soul is necessary for producing colored things. But then again, I’m sure that true color often comes from the deepest broken, damaged and divided black of one’s soul. Digital Jacklight is a mission to try and find out.
Hotly tipped by a handful of soothsayers to take 2009 by storm, Trembling Bells are an altogether different and refreshing musical experience to much of what seems to excite people at the moment. On first listen, it’s fairly easy to ignore — one could casually shrug it off as some limp take on Scottish baroque folk. Yet, there is something more to it. Rarely do you hear that high-pitched, warbling voice in mainstream music. Likewise the marching band cacophony going on in the background is both daring and highly intriguing.
