Stunning Snow Man lightpainting
Lightpainting photography isn’t always this awesome. These snowman were done using a five minute exposure on a pitchblack night with a full moon. Each snowman was created using a flashlight to trace around the edges of a person.

TOTEM: Cirque du Soleil in San Diego
Cirque du Soleil is an event shrouded in Franco-Canadian mystery. If you haven’t been, you wonder if a synthesis of circus styles could really reduce people to babbling superlatives when they return. Or if they’ve been bought. This isn’t a normal show of strength, flexibility or prowess. It’s a full five degrees of difficulty more than anything you can expect. Think one-footed unicyclists flipping metal bowls from their spare leg onto the head of another smiling-peddling-balancing-bowl-catching rider. Denver-based artist Max Kauffman has been productive, despite the finger numbing winter weather. In the last couple of months, he’s taken part in the successful group show, West vs. Middle (worth leaving the heater for, but be quick, it ends in February) and produced dreamy new watercolor and gouache pieces for his solo show, Ghosts of Industry.

Last weekend I went to the Golden West in Baltimore to check out the What Cheer? Brigade, a marching band from Providence. I wasn’t expecting much, but when they opened with a cover of Slayer’s Raining Blood, my knees buckled. I think I could hear a musak version of that riff, and I’d still bang my head. The rest of the band’s set was just as riotous, with people dancing so hard, you’d think we were at Mardi Gras. I haven’t had that much fun at a show in ages.
