Ma Peche, New York
I went to Ma Peche with my folks over Christmas because we’ve never actually been to a David Chang restaurant, and I gotta say, it was really not worth the crazy price-tag.
The food was kind of confused and not as good as it should have been — the beef cheek was just salty with not much else going on and the cauliflower puree was completely lost under it, the duck breast was annoyingly lean and also too salty, and while the sauce on the snails was remarkable, some of the snails were a bit gritty, something I would have overlooked had they been half the price that they were. Anyway, I hope I’ll get to eventually experience what makes people go apeshit over David Chang.

I don’t mean to be that “jump to David Changs defense” guy, but you chose to eat at his weakest restaurant. Ma Peche was basically opened to feed lunch to the hoards of businessmen in Midtown Manhattan, and if you knew the quality (and cost) of other Midtown lunch spots you’d know prices at generic delis in the area are almost as high.

Oh, I know, but try dragging 60-year-old parents to the East Village or whatever in the freezing cold. Not happening, and we happened to be staying near Ma Peche. Plus, several people had suggested it to us, so we took a chance. I don’t judge all of David Chang’s food on this place, I’ve had enough people I trust tell me he’s amazing to know that we should try his other places. But, if you’re a star chef protecting a brand name, why would you allow any of your restaurants to serve mediocre food?

I agree. I wasn’t a fan when it opened because it was clearly a business decision. Basically a way to make a lot of money with large lunch crowds. You should definitely try one of his other places next time you’re in town though, very consistently good food with great service.
